began as a search. A patient, steady effort to find the most exemplary people on earth, understand what drives them, and map the quiet force that runs through their lives. What emerged wasn't a list but a landscape — an archipelago of examples, each one distinct, yet connected. A set of lives that, together, offer a way to navigate the world.

Rob Hopkins began his journey as a permaculture teacher, deeply inspired by the potential of local action to address global challenges. Living in Totnes, England, he witnessed the growing anxieties around climate change, resource depletion, and the disconnect within communities. In 2005, Rob co-founded the Transition Movement, starting with Totnes as a model for what could happen when neighbors come together to reimagine their future. Transition Town Totnes became a living experiment in resilience, launching community-led projects like local currencies, renewable energy initiatives, and urban gardens. Rob’s vision was simple yet radical: empower communities to take control of their own destiny, moving away from fossil fuel dependency and toward sustainability, creativity, and connection. Through his work, Rob has sparked a global movement, inspiring thousands of Transition initiatives worldwide. For him, the Transition Movement is more than a strategy for tackling climate change—it’s a call to rediscover the power of collective imagination and build a future where communities thrive together, no matter the challenges they face.
